Yesterday I attended a really beautiful event at Blatchington Mill School to mark this important day which falls on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It’s a time when we can pause and reflect on the one of history’s most depraved human horrors and consider what it means for our generation.

Many different groups were targeted, and suffered, under Nazi rule. Gay, disabled, and people who resisted Nazi ideology were all brutalised and murdered. But the Holocaust refers to crimes against Jews because of the sheer numbers that suffered and died and because it is the singular time in human history when a nation state attempted to exterminate an entire population due to ethnicity or religion. It is literally unimaginable.

Last week I sponsored a debate in parliament to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and gave the opening speech. It’s here if you have a few moments to spare. All the best, Peter
