Last week the Mile Oak community took their campaign to the council. Over thirty parents and kids packed out the public gallery to watch mum’s Tiffany and Natalie make an anazing speech to a full council meeting.
They described to council what it was like to feel ashamed of the only recreation space within walking
distance of their homes, yet not being able to afford a bus to the decent play areas. It was so powerful and very moving.
I was sitting with the Mile Oak community in the public gallery. None of them had been to a council meeting before. There was a dozen impeccably behaved kids there too, several looking on with total pride as their mums socked it to the councillors!
When they finished, the public gallery rocked to the noise of cheering families! And when councillors voted unanimously to allow a review of the Mile Oak Rec to proceed the roars and cheering erupted again!
At times like these you can’t help but smile all the way home. The campaign continues….
All the best, Peter – at Hove Town Hall
