Peter Kyle for Hove and Portslade and Stephen Twigg (Labour and Coop MP for Liverpool West Derby) spent an inspiring and informative morning discussing ‘votes at 16’ with young people from across Brighton and Hove.

Stephen and Peter were first hosted by students at BHASVIC college, who expressed overwhelming support in favour of lowering voting age. Politics students from the college believe that an individual’s age is not necessarily a determining factor in whether they are politically engaged, or able to make an informed voting choice, therefore shouldn’t disbar those below eighteen from voting in elections.

These sentiments were later echoed by Brighton and Hove Young Labour who expressed a desire for political education to walk ‘hand in hand’ with extending the franchise to younger members of society, something which in their opinion, is unfortunately lacking in the current curriculum.
