On the 25th of April, Kier Starmer released the Labour Party’s commitment to the national renewal of our rail network. Labour will ensure that a reliable, safe, efficient, accessible, affordable, and quality transport system revives not burdens Britain.
The Labour Party under Keir Starmer is wholly committed to reversing the last 14 years of Tory mismanagement and cronyism. Britain has put up with 5 PMs prioritise lining the pockets of rail barons and wedge issue politics, over making essential services like rail affordable for normal people.
While the Conservatives cancelled HS2, Labour will get Britain building. While they promote an adversarial approach to industrial action (costing commuters valuable time and tax payers money), Labour will appoint an experienced industry professional to foster forum between the government and trade unions. Labour will also review the fares system, which has been overcomplicated by rail companies to charge commuters as much as possible.
The approach taken to public ownership will be pragmatic and measured. Within a single term, the core terms of the existing contracts expire, and ownership transferred to Great British Railways. In the meantime a shadow board of from GBR will manage failing networks.
Peter’s record of standing up for commuters and promoting relationships between organised labour and the government reinforces Labour’s commitments to reliable, comfortable, and efficient public transport.
