Western Road Post Office Closure

We’ve recently had news about the planned closure of the Western Road Post Office. I’m very worried about this and so I’ve been talking on your behalf to the Post Office.

As your MP I’m especially concerned that the more vulnerable, those without access to transport and the elderly will become poorly served. I’m conscious that people with children and those who commute will also have difficulty in accessing Post Office services if the closure goes ahead.

What the Post Office Say

The Post Office plan to increase services at the near-by Church Road Post Office and Melville Road Post Office. They say that the Western Road office is not “commercially sustainable” due to falling customer numbers. They also say they are modernising the other branches in the coming months.

Are you concerned?

You have a voice and make your views known. The Post Office has begun a 12-week consultation process and you can let your views known. I would encourage you to do this.

Who to contact

There is an online questionnaire here: postofficeviews.co.uk

Enter the code for the branch: 01090799

I’m very keen that our community in Brunswick has a voice over this important matter and will remain in contact with the Post Office to make our views known. Keep in touch with me too – you can leave your comments and views below!

I agree with all you say Ana. I’m not sure what they expect for the Monday to Friday footfall but there have always been people queuing, usually with parcels to send, when I’ve been either in or walked past. I work from home and use it regularly for business and personal reasons. As well as the negative impact for the elderly and disabled, there will ultimately be a knock on effect to small businesses in the area, with increased travelling time to alternative post offices and the longer queuing times. The Brighton alternative in Churchill Square always has long queues. Also the staff working at Western Road are very helpful and spend a lot of time helping customers with forms etc. It is part of the local community. And having refurbished the place recently it seems such a waste to then close it.

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of local residents, Peter! I have left my comments on the Post Office site; in brief – I said that as a regular Saturday morning user of the Western Rd branch, I have always witnessed queues of at least 5-6 people. This would seem to indicate that there are others, like me, who work full time and only have the already very restricted weekend opening times to do their shopping and chores. Other proposed branches are a significant walking distance further away, and driving (due to parking restrictions) or buses (due to cost of single journeys) aren’t really an option. I’ve suggested that the Post Office look into creating partnerships with local convenience stores that stay open longer on weekdays and weekends, therefore increasing choice for customers and improving their profitability, as I do suspect that the Monday – Friday footfall is relatively low.
