There are many parts of society that have been unfairly targeted by this government’s cuts, from people with disabilities through to community policing services. These are issues that will always be at the top of my agenda, but amidst these challenges we mustn’t forget the importance of animal welfare too.

Some time ago I joined the campaign to protect funding for the National Wildlife Crime Unit which as part of the Police Force is able to prevent animal welfare crime and arrest those who commit it.

Funding for this service had been scheduled for severe cuts and I gladly lent my support to the campaign to protect it. Today we heard the great news that the government has guaranteed its funding for the next four years. Phew!

I know these are challenging times and that the cuts to our local authority has meant that local animal welfare services have been reduced. But this news is a rare ray of light and is a credit to the campaigners who led this brilliant campaign. All the best, Peter
