Last year I was contacted by several local women who had just discovered that the government had changed their retirement age without warning them. The impact on their lives was profound and disturbing.

The very first person who turned to me for help when I became and MP was a woman who had just fled her abusive relationship and felt that she had nowhere else to turn. Since becoming an MP I have had the chance to meet, support, and listen too many people who have endured unimaginable horror within their own home and each one rocks me to my core. It is mostly, but not always women what I have met and who have suffered.

The National school funding formula is the method used to distribute money to ‘mainstream schools’ in England. The Conservative government have pledged to reallocate money so that there is a smaller disparity in spending between schools. Although a fairer national distribution of school funding is to be welcomed, this can only work if there are sufficient funds in the first place.

The NHS is one of the Labour Party’s greatest achievements, which is why I am incredibly worried about the current state of our National Health Service after years of mismanagement and under investment by the Conservative Government. We are seeing the effects of this locally, with our Hospital Trust in special measures and GP practices across the city closing down, putting more pressure on those that remain open. That is why I recently voted to scrap the incredibly damaging 1% pay cap on public workers so that the real terms cuts to their wages can be reversed.

Back in the 1990’s I was an aid worker and saw first-hand what terrible places refugee camps are. You can imagine much of it: the discomfort, the dependency on others for everything from food to sanitation, and the chaos. But think of the emotional side of it too. Everyone who lands up in a refugee camp is missing family, friends, and that huge connection that we have to ‘home’.

With an estimated 4,095 people sleeping rough or in emergency or temporary accommodation, this is a desperate problem for our city. Homelessness fell by almost two thirds under Labour but has doubled with Conservative Ministers in charge. Resolving issues relating to the street community is not an easy task, particularly at a time when the number of people on the streets in increasing. This is due to a wide number of factors, such as changes in the benefits system and an increasing number of migrants and ex-service people who are finding themselves without accommodation.

I have been deeply frustrated by the government’s approach to supporting those with disabilities. The comments we heard from George Freeman, a government adviser, concerning PIP only reaching the “really disabled” were deeply troubling.

Microbeads have been proven to escape water filtration systems and regularly end up in aquatic food chains. These tiny bits of plastic are harmful to both marine ecosystems and Human health. One study in 2016 estimated that one in three fish pulled from the English Channel had consumed microbeads, and that a plate of oysters from the same area could contain up to 50 micro beads at any time. Clearly, plastic ending up in our food sources us not an ideal situation.
