In his National Statement at the COP 29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated the environmental focus of the Labour government.

The UK will now aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% on 1990 levels by 2035, aligning with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris agreement.

This comes following launch of Great British Energy, the National Wealth Fund investing in green energy, the ban on onshore wind, the closure of the UK’s last coal power plant, a commitment to no new North Sea Oil and gas licenses and a continued dedication to provide £11.6 billion of climate finance carried over from the previous government.

Speaking at the summit, Sir Keir said: “Climate action is at the heart of this government’s mission for the protection and prosperity of Britain and the world.”

On top of this, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband has secured the approval of a record number of clean energy projects, as well as new carbon capture, usage and storage projects.
